Drone manufacturer for Ukraine offered Czech Republic a test kit

July 2024

The UAC company, which launched the production of military drones for the Ukrainian armed forces in Kolín a few months ago, is testing a drone for destroying targets. The unmanned guidance drones, which it produces in the hundreds annually, are currently aimed exclusively at Ukraine. In the future, the company wants to look for customers in other countries. The company has now offered the Czech Army one set of drones for free testing for training Ukrainian soldiers, said Defense Minister Jana Černochová (ODS) after visiting the company.

“The set should be used to train Ukrainian soldiers who operate in the Czech Republic based on the mandate of both chambers of parliament and whom we train for the benefit of the Ukrainian armed forces,” said Černochová. According to her, operators and pilots will be able to train with drones on Czech territory.

“It’s good that our soldiers will have the opportunity to try it out,” said former Defense Minister Lubomír Metnar (for ANO). But according to him, it’s nothing groundbreaking, as the Czech Army includes the 53rd Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare Regiment, which includes the UAV battalion. “Of course, it is equipped with UAVs and has been working with this technology for a long time,” he noted.

According to the minister, the company is the largest supplier of drones to the Ukrainian armed forces and has the best results in monitoring the situation. “Their information is used by the Ukrainian armed forces for further progress on the front,” she added. She recalled that the establishment of the company in the Czech Republic is the result of cooperation agreed upon by the Czech and Ukrainian governments at the end of 2022.

The company currently produces two models of reconnaissance drones that provide real-time overview and guidance of artillery fire on the battlefield. The set, which is headed to Ukraine in two transport boxes, includes three drones and accessories. In the testing phase and before the start of production, there is a so-called suicide drone, which is used to destroy targets. “It is essentially a remotely controlled missile,” said UAC Executive Director Pavel Bulant.

The company has built on the roughly ten-year tradition and know-how of the Ukrainian company and moved part of its production to the Czech Republic from the Dnieper in eastern Ukraine. It began full-scale operations in Kolín this spring, employing roughly eighty people, eighty percent of whom are Ukrainians. According to Bulant, production is largely independent of subcontractors; electronics and optics, for example, are produced directly at the Kolín plant.
